Pro vs. Con: Joe Jonas, breakout star or broken act?

By Brittney Corum

The Beatles broke up, and John Lennon was the break out star; The Jackson Five broke up and Michael Jackson went solo and became the King of Pop; NSYNC produced Justin Timberlake, and of course, Destiny’s Child gave birth to the Queen Bee, Beyoncé.

Anyone else see a theme here? If you don’t, let me point it out for you. Each band had a breakup and one star of the band always seems to out shine his or her band mates and go on to have a great solo career.

Then we have Joe Jonas.

For those who have been under a rock for the last ten years, Joe Jonas was part of the band called the Jonas Brothers, which of course consisted of his older brother Kevin and little brother Nick. The band had some teen hits “Year 3000,” and “Burning Up.”

Heck the siblings’ trio even had two Disney movies and a Disney T.V. Series before calling it quits in 2013.

Since the break up, Nick, the younger Jonas, has taken over the media and song charts by storm. He’s staring in the move “Careful What You Wish For” and his song “Jealous” was 40 on the Billboard charts and 17th on Digital download.

Nicks receives the most buzz and talk on social media, especially Twitter. But, now that Nick has some attention it seems the middle child, Joe, wants some of it back.

Joe to me just seems that he is just going coming back to music so that he can show up his little brother. Now I’m not saying that Joe isn’t popular, I mean he did do a movie a couple years ago and then just fell off the map. I just feel like he should just stop while he is ahead and just live off the money he made from his other projects and let his brother have the spotlight. You got to know when you’re time is up, and trust me; Joe’s time is up.

If you know good music, then you would agree the Jonas Brothers were one of the best bands in 2010.

Recently, middle brother and lead singer of the Jonas Brothers, Joe Jonas, has decided to start his own band, titled DNCE. After only 2 years of the Jo Bro split, it might seem a little fast, but maybe not fast enough.

I, personally being totally and completely obsessed with Joe Jonas for years, think that this is long overdue.

We are all aware of the immense success that brother, Nick Jonas, has been having in the music industry lately. Maybe this is Joe’s way of saying, “HEY! I’m good too!”

This band has surfaced completely out of the blue. Joe posted on Instagram, a video with the simple caption, @dnce. The video was of multiple voices singing DNCE while the letters flashed across the screen, followed by four figures coming out of the ocean, and ending with a male voice yelling, “OK.”

Since then they have released their first single, entitled, “Cake by the Ocean.” When first listening to the song, it makes absolutely no sense lyrically. But, the beat is pretty amazing.

Joe said in an interview with MTV, the new single is “kind of lyrically wacky song, and it kind of embodies the band. It’s funky, it’s fresh, I think it’s something that people can dance to.”

After listening to it a few more times, I finally got the gist of the song. The band members said the song started as a joke, but basically it insinuates some sexual activity, ooh la la.

I think it’s safe to say that Joe Jonas has definitely grown up. In this song he says not one, but two curse words, which in all reality is pretty common, but is kind of surprising for a former boy band member.

And, whoa. The song has a few sexual references as well.

But overall, I give Joe and his new band DNCE, two thumbs and two toes up. Keep making Jo Bro fans proud.
