The women’s tennis team kept another HCAC championship alive on Sunday after it beat Transylvania 5-4, improving the season record to 7-3 and 6-1 in conference play.

Head Coach Rusty Hughes thought that the No. 2 and 3 teams played really aggressive, which he thought jump-started the team for the day.

Winners on the day included sophomores Melissa Sanders (7-5, 7-5), Emily Roberts (6-1, 6-1) and junior Becky Bonomini (6-2, 6-2) in singles competition.

“The star of the day had to be Melissa Sanders, who beat last year’s Player of the Year in straight sets,” Hughes said. “Melissa is having a great year.”

The team of sophomore Chelsea Howell and freshman Allison Meyer won its doubles match (8-5), as well as sophomore Chelsea Platt and freshman Emily Helvie (8-2).

The team will play Hanover on Wednesday night at 5 p.m. A win against the Panthers will give Franklin this year’s conference title. The Grizzlies won conference last year and is looking for a repeat.

“We hope that students will come and support the women’s tennis team in there last home match of the year,” Hughes said.
